“Italian Improvers. This group is for anybody who has some knowledge of Italian or has studied it in the past and is making a fresh start. As with the beginner’s group there is no set book. We use a variety of materials drawn from the group leader’s personal collection of printed and electronic courses as well as from the internet, e.g. Coffee Break Italian Season 2. Participants are encouraged to continue studying Duolingo between sessions. We watch videos, listen to recorded material, and read a variety of printed texts including simple, and sometimes not quite so simple, “easy readers”. Texts are read aloud but afterwards we study them to make sure we can translate them and understand how the language works. Grammar is studied in a little more depth than in the beginners’ group and includes more complicated grammar such as direct and indirect object pronouns. We try to speak a little Italian during the sessions and participants are often invited to prepare a short paragraph or two between sessions to present to the group at the next meeting.
The group meets twice a month, usually on alternate Tuesday mornings, at the group leader’s home. Sessions normally start at 10:30am and last 90 minutes to two hours. The leader takes the view that participants are learning for pleasure and so there is no pressure to complete any homework and the atmosphere in the “classes” is relaxed and informal. The maximum number of participants at any one time is six. The group leader makes no claim to be a natural linguist or to speak fluent Italian. However he enjoys trying to learn languages and aims to encourage others to discover the pleasure to be had in studying Italian. He does his best to keep one step ahead of the rest of the group!”
The group currently has space for two more participants.
