The Bedford Estate and Workers' Housing in Tavistock in the 19th Century - Andrew Thompson
06-10-2021When the Industrial Revolution transformed Tavistock from rural town to mining centre, a rapidly growing population was crammed into insanitary and overcrowded housing in the central streets. Ranging from the World Heritage Bedford cottages to the speaker's 'ordinary' terraced house, this illustrated talk explores the complex and conflicting cultural, economic, political, social factors which influenced how the Dukes of Bedford responded to the 19th century housing crisis.
Andrew Thompson is a historian and archaeologist based in West Devon who works as a self employed heritage consultant. His clients have included the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, Plymouth's Mayflower 2020, Dartmoor National Park, the Tamar Valley AONB and the Museum of Policing in Devon and Cornwall. Andrew is an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of Plymouth and Vice Chair of the South West Federation of Museums and Art Galleries.
