01-09-2021A short text written in Italian by a member of the Tavy u3a Italian Improvers group about “strangozzi”, a particular pasta shape popular in Umbria, triggered an interest in this iconic foodstuff and sent the presenter down a rabbit hole of research to learn about the origins of pasta, the Arab occupation of Sicily, the difference between “hard” and “soft” wheat, the hatred of the clergy in the Papal States, the use of pasta as a murder weapon, the industrialisation of pasta production and the foundation of a new “religion”.Paul Ward, a member and former chair of Tavy District u3a, leads the Italian Improvers Group. As a retired paediatrician, Paul’s only qualifications for speaking on this topic are an inquiring mind and a love of both food and Italy.
