U3A aims and objectives are to enhance the lives of people no longer working by providing a social network of those with similar interest. We do this through more than 50 Interest Groups providing educational, leisure and recreational activities for the benefit of members in Tavistock and the surrounding area. Groups are organised on a self help basis where we share knowledge and experience. Under normal circumstances we have good programme of social events and several active walking groups.
In compliance with the latest Government guidelines, the monthly face-to-face meetings of Tavy District U3A that are normally held in the Town Hall remain cancelled until further notice. However, we will continue to hold them via Zoom on the first Wednesday of each month – invitations will be sent out approximately a week before (with a reminder closer to the time). So, don’t forget to check your inboxes!
Many thanks to Laura Cowie, Devon Police Cyber Protect Officer, for her recent very interesting presentation on current scams and how to avoid them. I think the key word is ‘passwords’!
Our Website carries updates and, as things progress, we will keep you informed as to when we can tentatively begin our groups once again. At present, we can meet up outside in both public spaces and private gardens in groups of no more than 6. The Group Co-Ordinator has informed the Group Leaders as to procedures to follow. So far, our Walking Group and the Petanque Group are hoping to restart this month. If you are interested, click on the link to these groups and contact the Group Leaders.
In the meantime, we have identified an exciting initiative to put in place for the National u3a Day on Wednesday 2nd June to raise our profile, contribute to the community and encourage new members. Watch this space and the Newsletter for more information!
There are also tentative plans being discussed as to how to facilitate our first ‘proper’ meeting later on in the year. Obviously, this will depend on the Government guidelines/advice in place at the time. We will keep you informed.
Finally, a plea from the Newsletter editor. Whilst appreciating that there is no real ‘new’ news from the groups, it would be lovely to have a full Newsletter as normal. So, could you consider writing an article, forwarding some photographs, contributing a favourite poem or recipe, writing a film/TV/book review? Anything would be welcome! Please email email@example.com. The deadline is 20th April. Thanking you all in advance.
I hope that you are all being able to take advantage of the easing of the restrictions and look forward to meeting you all in the not too distant future – who thought that a coffee in the garden with friends would be such an event!
For and on behalf of the Committee of Tavy District u3a.
