U3A aims and objectives are to enhance the lives of people no longer working by providing a social network of those with similar interest. We do this through more than 50 Interest Groups providing educational, leisure and recreational activities for the benefit of members in Tavistock and the surrounding area. Groups are organised on a self help basis where we share knowledge and experience. Under normal circumstances we have good programme of social events and several active walking groups.
In compliance with the latest Government guidelines, the monthly face-to-face meetings of Tavy District U3A that are normally held in the Town Hall remain cancelled until further notice. However, we will continue to hold them via Zoom on the first Wednesday of each month – invitations will be sent out approximately a week before (with a reminder closer to the time). So, don’t forget to check your inboxes!
Many thanks to our recent speaker Joss Hibbs, Resident Potter at The Powdermills Pottery on Dartmoor on The Alternative History of Ponies on Dartmoor. Absolutely fascinating – I learnt so much and will never take for granted the sight of these sturdy creatures again. I had no idea that there are, in fact, two types of Dartmoor pony. If you missed the presentation or want to find out more, go and visit the Dartmoor Hill Pony exhibition up at the Pottery.
We are planning to resume our ‘normal’ monthly meetings from September 1st as the Town Hall will be available. However, we do not as yet know what these meetings will ‘look’ like. We will obviously keep to the government guidelines/recommendations that are in place at the time. The committee are looking at a possible hybrid meeting where we have a speaker and audience in the Town Hall but are also able to zoom the meeting to additional members either in another venue or at home.
Our Website carries updates and, as things progress, we will keep you informed as to when we can begin our groups once again. From May 17th, we can meet up outside in public spaces in groups of up to 30 and indoors, in groups of no more that 6. The Group Co-Ordinator is in touch with the Group Leaders but the Rule of 6 and the current weather situation means that not many of our groups will be restarting this month. Please keep monitoring the website for any further news.
We are continuing to plan how to facilitate our first ‘proper’ meeting in August. Obviously, this will depend on the Government guidelines/advice in place at the time. However, we would like you to ‘Keep the Date’ of Wednesday 4th August for this. We are planning an open air purely social event with refreshments available. This will primarily be for all members – existing and new. We will keep you informed!
