This group is for members who already have some knowledge of Italian. It is not suitable for absolute beginners. We study a variety of written and recorded materials and make liberal use of the wealth of material on the internet. We watch videos, listen to recorded material, and read a variety of printed texts including simple, and sometimes not quite so simple, “easy readers”. Texts are read aloud but afterwards we study them to make sure we can translate them and understand how the language works. Grammar includes more complicated elements such as direct and indirect object pronouns. We try to speak at least some Italian during the sessions and participants are encouraged to prepare a short paragraph or two between sessions to present to the group at the next meeting.
We study Italian for the pure pleasure of enjoying la bella lingua, so there is no pressure to complete any homework and the atmosphere in the “classes” is relaxed, informal and non-judgemental. We usually laugh a lot. The group leader, who was a medic in a previous life, makes no claim to be a natural linguist or to speak fluent Italian. However, he enjoys trying to learn languages and aims to encourage others to do the same.
The group currently has spaces for some more participants. In the event of demand exceeding capacity, we would try to encourage and facilitate the formation of a second group.
