This group has the objective of exploring different aspects of local history from the Bronze Age to the present day.
Our area of Devon, bordering Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley, is an ancient and compelling landscape, seemingly very natural but in reality much modified by our predecessors. Rocks N Ruins caters for those with an interest in learning about the history of this wonderful area.
We plan to visit a variety of sites, from Bronze Age settlements, quarrying of granite and slate, tinning, farming, towns and villages, and lots more besides.
Outings will involve some walking of up to about 4 miles to explore various archaeological and industrial aspects of the chosen subject.
Everyone in the group will be encouraged to research and lead walks, but you don't have to be an expert to enjoy Rocks N Ruins
Some of our outings have included Wheal Martyn clay museum, Willsworthy military ranges, Kelly Mine at Lustleigh and the Plymouth Leat combined with the Mayflower Water Treatment Works.
Later in 2026 we have plans to explore the bridges, old and newer, of Exeter, a walk looking at the tramways, railways and leats above Burrator reservoir and visits to Buckfastleigh steam railway, Beer Caves and King Edward Mine amongst others.
